Welcome to the online open house for the Sign Code Update! We’re nearing the end of a multi-year project to substantially update community sign regulations. The project was started in response to a Supreme Court ruling that changed the way signs can be regulated. The sign code sets standards for private signage across the community while considering community character and visual impacts of signs. Signs can be a positive attribute to the community by activating a pedestrian space or assisting visitors to find destinations. Signs can also have negative impacts by creating an environment of clutter or confusion.

To make sure that we are encouraging positive signs that allow businesses to thrive while managing the visual impacts of signs that do not fit with our community character, we need input and feedback from people like you.

The COVID-19 public health crisis has disrupted our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined, including our ability to meet with you in person to talk about the proposed code. To continue doing our part to keep Steamboat residents and visitors safe, we have created several ways for you to get involved and share your feedback from a distance. Please take advantage of one or more of these ways to make sure we know what’s important to you when it comes to signage in Steamboat Springs.

The online open house includes four activities organized into each of the tabs below:

1. Review the informational boards accompanied by short, optional videos

2. Review the Context Areas map to see how the new code will be applied in different parts of the City

3. Provide feedback and comment on open house materials and sections of the proposed code.

4. Join one of the four Q&A sessions, or the public work session with Planning Commission

Results

We will take feedback on the proposed sign code through the adoption process where City Council will make the final decision. All comments we receive will be responded to, summarized, and provided in a document for City Council review prior to decision.
