Mt. Werner Reopens Ahead of Holiday Weekend
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-June 28, 2021-Mt. Werner Road is scheduled to reopen to vehicle traffic beginning on Thursday, July 1, 2021, as promised at the start of the Mt. Werner/Steamboat Blvd Roundabout project back in April. The entire project is on schedule to be complete in early November as originally announced.
“Allowing the full closure of Mt. Werner enabled a significant amount of infrastructure work to be done and ensured this project will be completed in one year instead of two,” commented Project Manager & Public Works Engineer Danny Paul. “With the reopening, pressure on Walton Creek will be reduced and the mountain area will have two access points for the remainder of the project.”
With the reopening, Phase I of the Roundabout Project will be wrapping up and moves into Phase II. Phase I work consisted of deep utility installations most of which will be unnoticeable when the road reopens but was important work necessary for roundabout construction to begin.
Starting Thursday, one lane in each direction along Mt. Werner Road will reopen to vehicular travel. Motorists will be driving on an all-weather gravel surface through the construction zone and speed limits will be reduced to 25 mph. The traveling public is asked to slow down in the cone zone and understand that intermittent travel delays may be encountered. Pedestrian and bicycle routes will be open through and around the project area.
Even with the reopening of Mt. Werner, there will be no direct access from Mt. Werner Rd to Steamboat Blvd. or Broomtail Lane at this time. The connection to Steamboat Blvd should be made sometime in the August to September timeframe, while Broomtail Lane will remain closed until the end of project. The Montview Lane neighborhoods will remain accessible from Mt. Werner Rd.
The detour route using Walton Creek Road will no longer be signed or necessary to use to avoid the construction zone. Motorists going to/from the mountain area are encouraged to use Mt. Werner Road.
Over the coming months, Phase III work will begin in August or September and will shift efforts from the north side of Mt. Werner Rd over to the south side at which time open traffic lanes will also be shifted.
The project team continues to host bi-weekly meetings that are open to the public. The next meeting will be held at 10am on July 2 and will occur every other Friday through the end of construction. Additional information on the project can be found at www.engagesteamboat.net/roundabout.
